SAMS INDEX

to Carl von Clausewitz's On War

as translated by Michael Howard and Peter Paret
Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1976

Index prepared by Seminar Four, U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), 1994-1995

Preface to the SAMS Index

This index provides students of Carl von Clausewitz's On War with a comprehensive subject index. It covers not only On War itself, but also the introductory and concluding essays by Peter Paret, Michael Howard, and Bernard Brodie (pp.3-58; 638-711). Though there is some overlap with the "Index of Names and Places" and "Chronological Index of Wars, Campaigns and Battles" included in recent editions of the Howard and Paret translation, it should be used in conjunction with, rather than as a replacement for, those indexes.

This index was compiled by the School of Advanced Military Studies, Seminar Four, Class of 1994-95. It is expected that this initial offering may be refined in future printings in order to better serve its users. This version is dated 29 JAN 1998. Address recommended changes to Russell Glenn at [email protected].
